Omschrijving | Economists are increasingly aware of the fact that path dependency characterizes processes of economic growth. Choices made by economic actors in the past have a far-reaching influence on the nature and rate of growth in later periods. Economic behaviour which at first sight might seem unfamiliar and even irrational, can be quite logical when the historical context is taken into account. We focus on the question of prime determinants of growth and change. We will analyse to what extent economic growth is driven by factor substitution and/or the introduction of new (general purpose) technologies. We will then pay attention to fundamentals of growth, like institutions and culture and geography in shaping development. In our discussion the main economic growth models will receive ample attention. Additionally, the application of a historical and comparative perspective gives insights in deeply engrained differences and the impact of variety on economic growth. | ||||||||||||||||
