Omschrijving	This course examines the concept of “political leadership” through the lens of decision-making. Specifically, we will focus on two decision-making problems. The first problem relates to individual decision-making and is called the problem of dirty hands. It refers to dilemmas faced by political leaders in contexts of moral complexity, when doing wrong is necessary to achieve a greater good. Political morality does not abide by the same rule as traditional morality, or so it is sometimes argued by philosophers. We will read both classical and contemporary authors debating this question. The second problem relates to collective decision-making and is called the problem of many hands. I use this expression to refer to citizens’ disengagement in contemporary democracies (e.g. low turnout, low trust in institutions and government). Against the background of the crisis of representative democracy, we will discuss a number of proposals to reinvigorate citizens’ participation. This course takes an experiential learning approach, in which you acquire skills and knowledge about deliberative public engagement – a form of participatory democracy – by taking part in student-based citizens’ assembly and engaging in critical reflection of the process of decision-making.
