Leerdoelen Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyse the interactions between economic, social, cultural, material and technological aspects of fossil-based societies;
- Relate scenarios for energy transition to socio-technical structures;
- Connect current trends or specific projects in society to approaches to energy transition.
Omschrijving Energy underpins many aspects of our post-industrial world, and it is embedded deeply in both nature and culture as a socio-technical system. This means that any changes to our energy systems-- to make them more sustainable and avoid climate emergencies-- will have material, social and environmental implications. Furthermore, energy solutions that can have a positive effect at the global level can have negative consequences more locally. An integrated perspective on energy transition is therefore essential.
In this course, we will learn to relate scenarios for energy transition to socio-technical structures and to recognize how scenarios shape roles, values, responsibilities and consequences. We will also consider how ‘shocks’, such as the recent pandemic, can affect the paths of energy transition and how the current impasse can be a space of transformation. This will provide insight into how to organize both debate and support from actors in the energy transition.
We will deepen our understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches covered in the track so far (modelling, practice theory, multi-level perspective). In pursuing an individual project, students will use the chosen approach to study a case of an energy transition, including the environmental processes (resource potential, influencing factors), the potential for energy generation, and infrastructural aspects involved. Students will formulate how their case provides a way out of the current impasse, and use their creativity to help us see a future beyond the current assumptions about material, environmental and social arrangements.

(Students will be assessed on their participation (reflection on own learning) and on a main project. The main project will be made up of several components (literature review, student-led session, policy-brief) that will all contribute to the overall assignment.)
