Leerdoelen Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand concepts of ecosystem and dynamics;
- Distinguish between processes (vegetation, soil) and biochemical cycles; Recognize differences between types of management;
- Develop critical understanding of ecosystem services.
Omschrijving This course provides a conceptual basis for understanding abiotic and biotic processes in terrestrial ecosystems and their role in- as well as their sensitivity to climate- and global change. Ecosystems play an essential role in the Earth’s energy and water balance, biogeochemical cycles and provide ecosystem services, e.g., food, water and energy production, climate regulation, nutrient cycling and recreation. On the other hand, there is large concern about the increasing impacts of climate and global change on ecosystems, e.g., loss of biodiversity, posing a serious threat for the global environment and human health. Consequently, fundamental knowledge about ecology and ecosystem functioning is essential to evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies to cope with climate and global
change. This course has a strong focus on the functioning of managed ecosystems recognising the significant role of agriculture in climate and global change and includes an introduction into ecosystem services to demonstrate the many
functions of ecosystems for environment and society.

In this course the students will be introduced in the following themes:
- the ecosystem concept;
- terrestrial water and energy balance;
- vegetation processes;
- soil processes;
- nutrient cycling;
- landscape heterogeneity and ecosystem dynamics;
- natural versus managed ecosystems; land use and management;
- global biogeochemical cycles;
- ecosystem services.
