Investment of millions of euros in astroparticle physics

12 April 2018

The neutrino telescope KM3NeT has received in the framework of the NWO Roadmap for scientific research infrastructures a grant of 12.7 million euro received as a contribution for the investments in this telescope under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. With this grant the Netherlands provides a substantial contribution to this investment aimed to detect neutrinos, ghostly particles with almost no mass and no electric charge. The observations of these neutrinos will be used to gain more insight in the violent explosions which generate both extremely high-energy particles such as neutrinos and photons as well as gravitational waves. KVI-CART is for more than a decade involved in the design, construction, and data analysis of KM3NeT and its predecessor ANTARES.
