The University of Groningen (UG) has awarded the contract for the renovation of the new Campus Fryslân faculty building to Bouwgroep Dijkstra Draisma from Bolsward. The University of Groningen recently acquired the former Beursgebouw in Leeuwarden, projected to accommodate about a thousand students and staff of Campus Fryslân.
‘We have complete confidence in the collaboration with the selected contractor’, says Jan de Jeu, Vice President of the Board of the University of Groningen. ‘They have a great deal of experience in construction in complex, inner-city settings, and we expect that together we’ll be able to realize a beautiful facility for the students and staff of Campus Fryslân.’
Tjebbe de Jong, project developer at Bouwgroup Dijkstra Draisma, is pleased with the new project in the centre of Leeuwarden.‘We appreciate the confidence expressed in us, and look forward to collaborating with the UG. This is an unusual project and we welcome the challenge of converting a monument like this into a university building.’
Thanks to the renovation, the faculty building will become much more sustainable. Insulation will be improved and 362 solar roof panels will be installed, and the building will not use natural gas. It will be ‘all electric’, even the heating. That is remarkable for a monumental building. As a result of these alterations, the building will earn a C or even B energy label, instead of its current G label. Leeuwarden will have the first monumental all-electric teaching facility in the Netherlands. In addition to sustainability measures, the design focuses strongly on highlighting or revitalizing the historical importance of the building.
About Campus Fryslân
In the long term, the building will provide teaching space for around 1000 Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students studying at Campus Fryslân, the new faculty of the UG. The teaching and research of the new faculty are strongly inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations for a sustainable, just and safe world. Most of the Masters’ programmes have already begun. In September 2018, the new Bachelor’s programme in Global Responsibility & Leadership and the Master’s programme in Sustainable Entrepreneurship will be launched.
