Vacancy: Professor of Chinese Language and Culture (1.0 fte) (215010)

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen is seeking a professor of Chinese Language and Culture. The professor initiates and contributes to programmes regarding the teaching and research on Chinese language and culture.

The professor conducts research on Chinese language and culture and is affiliated to Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG), Graduate School for Humanities (GSH) and in particular to the new Centre for East Asian Studies Groningen (CEASG) at Globalisation Studies Groningen (GSG) within the Faculty of Arts.

The professor spearheads the development of a teacher training programme for Chinese at high schools (“HAVO” and “VWO”). The professor also contributes towards the planning and development of a new minor, as a potential starting point of the development of a bachelor programme for Chinese language and culture at the Faculty of Arts.

Knowledge of or interest in the interface of language, society and politics, international political economy regarding China would be welcomed.

The incumbent Professor works both for the Faculty and the Groningen Confucius Institute (GCI) on a 50-50 basis, with 60% education and management tasks and 40% research. On the basis of the dual appointment, the Professor contributes to the further development of both the Faculty, especially GSG / CEASG, and GCI.

The ratio between research duties and teaching (including management) duties will be 40:60.

The position involves

  • initiating, coordinating and teaching bachelor’s and master’s course units
  • coordinating and conducting research in the field of the chair’s mandate
  • supervising PhD candidates
  • acquiring external funds for research
  • performing administrative and organizational tasks within the Faculty and where necessary outside it
  • further cultivating and developing national and international contacts to benefit the chair-related teaching and research.
