East Asian Studies visiting Asia and Oceania Department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs
On 16 January 2015 East Asian Studies Master students visited the Asia and Oceania Department (DAO) of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hague as well as the Clingendael Institute.
At the Ministry Jan Waltmans, vice-director of DAO and policy officer Martijn van Lith gave presentations in an informal setting where there was ample opportunity to get an insider’s view on current affairs in East Asia from the Dutch and European perspective. Later that afternoon current security matters in East Asia, especially relating to China, were discussed with senior Research fellow Frans-Paul van der Putten at Clingendael. The visit one of many extracurricular or elective options for students in East Asian Studies, including work placements and study in East Asia itself.
