Eugène van Puijenbroek Professor by Special Appointment in Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety

18 March 2014

Eugène van Puijenbroek will become Professor by Special Appointment in Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety at the University of Groningen on 1 April.

The chair is sponsored by the Nederlands Bijwerkingen Fonds [Netherlands Side Affects Fund] and aims to stimulate research into side effects and help develop the field of pharmacovigilance as an academic discipline.

Van Puijenbroek’s research will focus on the side effects of medicines and the development of methods to chart side effects, paying special attention to drugs and pregnancy. Teaching will of course also be one of his spearheads.

The chair forms part of the department of Pharmacotherapy and Pharmaceutical Care of the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy (GRIP) and the degree programme in Pharmacy. The chair will help reinforce the contribution of clinical practice to the Pharmacy programme’s teaching and research.

Eugène van Puijenbroek (Tilburg, 1960) studied medicine at the University of Nijmegen and followed his GP training at the University of Maastricht. In 2001 he gained his PhD at Utrecht University with a thesis entitled ‘ Quantitative signal detection in Pharmacovigilance’. He joined the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb in 1993 and will continue to work there alongside his professorship.
