From September 5 till 7 the Japan Netherlands Student Conference will take place in Groningen. In this annual conference students from Osaka University and students from the University of Groningen gather to discuss a topical issue of mutual interest. The conference will also be attended by 27 students from Osaka who have attended language courses in English these last two weeks and have gained some experience in what life looks like as an international student in Groningen.

Sustainable energy

The theme that the students selected for the year 2013, Sustainable energy in a changing World is a truly excellent choice. This issue is of crucial importance to Japan, the Netherlands and indeed the world at large. Especially following the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, the energy policy of various countries has made a dramatic shift. Understandably, even more so in Japan, that is confronted daily with the problems concerning nuclear energy such as the newly discovered leaks in Fukushima.

Programme

The conference will start on September 5th and is open to the public. Professor Linda Steg, drs F. Kooiman, professor A.J.M Schoot Uiterkamp will address issues like the psychology of energy transition, the Dutch energy policy and a global perspective on Japan and energy. Rector magnificus professor Elmer Sterken will discuss a more general problem of the position of Europe since the Eurocrisis.

Practical information

The conference will take place in the Senate room, Academy Building from 10.00-12.45. The session in the afternoon will be in the Glazen Zaal, Van Swinderenhuys, Oude Boteringestraat 19, Groningen, from 14.00-17.00.
All are welcome.
