President’s Journal: Prof. Poppema and Ambassador Marsudi enjoy Indonesian Day in Groningen

On Saturday 27 April, Sibrandes Poppema, President of the Board of the University of Groningen, and H.E. Mrs Retno L.P. Marsudi, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Netherlands, attended ‘The Indonesian Day: Heritage of Mankind’ in Groningen. The Indonesian Students Association in Groningen (Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia di Groningen, PPIG) organized the 2013 Indonesian Day in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia. Poppema praised the Indonesian students for organizing ‘an impressive event’ and said he was really proud of them.

During her opening speech, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Netherlands, H.E. Mrs Retno L.P. Marsudi explained the history of Nusantara (the Indonesian Archipelago), referring to its rich ethnic, cultural and culinary traditions. Ambassador Marsudi concluded by inviting the Dutch community to visit Indonesia and experience Indonesia’s diversity at first hand.

During Indonesian Day, special activities such as a batik workshop, an Indonesian food bazaar and traditional cultural performances were organized to demonstrate Indonesian culture to the Dutch community. The event was officially concluded by an Indonesian Dinner, attended by 150 foreign guests.
