As of 1st December, Professor Cees Sterks has taken office as Director ad interim of KVI. Professor Sterks has been asked by the Board of the University of Groningen to oversee the transition of KVI into a new situation. In order to clearly mark the transition and to give it every chance of succeeding, the current KVI Director, Professor Klaus Jungmann, has decided to resign his post.

The current particle accelerator (AGOR) of KVI will be decommissioned in the course of 2014, and a request for funding from NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, to have AGOR replaced by a new instrument (ZFEL) has not been successful. These developments have made it necessary to reconsider the future of KVI.

An external arbiter was appointed by the Board of the University to investigate scenarios for the future. The Board has decided to follow the advice of the arbiter to introduce a new centre for the development of advanced scientific instrumentation within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. To investigate the chances of the new centre, a committee of three experts has been put together to develop a business case.

Professor Sterks will oversee the transition of KVI until 1st January 2014. For the present, he will combine the position of Director a.i. of KVI with his position as Director of the Centre for Information Technology of the University of Groningen.
