On November 1, 2012, Dr. E.G. Winkel was appointed Professor in Extended Competencies in Periodontology, especially halitosis, by means of the Foundation
Nederlandse Vereniging voor Parodontologie (NVvP)
, at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). It is the first chair in this field in Europe.
Edwin Winkel (Groningen, 1955) studied Dentistry at the University of Groningen and specialised in Periodontology and Implantology. He has worked at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) and was the founder of the Clinic for Periodontology in Amsterdam. He defended his thesis entitled “Systemic antibiotic therapy in periodontics” at the University of Amsterdam in 2000. In 2005, Dr. Winkel was appointed at the Department of Periodontology at the UMCG. In recent years, he specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of a widespread social issue, i.e., halitosis or bad breath. His research has attracted more attention to this taboo. He started the first University Clinic for Halitosis at the UMCG. Winkel will focus his research on unravelling the causes of Halitosis and its treatment. He also aims to bring knowledge about halitosis to the general public.
