Opening of Academic Year 2010

In celebration of the opening of Academic Year 2010-2011, the University is once again organizing a festive event for all its students and staff. After the toast by the Rector Magnificus with all students and the traditional balcony scene with the board members of all the Groningen student and study associations, there will be a huge party with shows by various acts on the Broerplein in front of the Academy Building.

Come to the Opening on 6 September and raise a glass of (free) champagne to the new Academic Year and enjoy all the fun!

Programme for invitees in the Aula of the Academy Building starts at 4 p.m.

  • Speech by Prof. F. Zwarts, Rector Magnificus
  • Musical interlude
  • Speech by Ms A.M. Elshof, deputy chair of the University Council
  • Speech by Mr. M.F. Zwaan: Studeren in het tijdperk van de massa-universiteit
  • Presentation of the Guyot Prize to Prof. A. James Hudspeth, professor at Rockefeller University in New York.
  • Musical interlude
  • A reading by the new University Poet, Joost Oomen
  • Reception

After the programme for invitees, there is a public programme outside on the Academieplein organized by students.


In between the acts, DJ Edwige and DJ Jeroen Rijskamp will spin discs.

Name of new examination hall

At about 6 p.m. the name of the new examination hall will be announced and the winner of the competition will receive a great laptop.
