Three professors become KNAW members

Groningen Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has chosen 27 new members. Three of them are associated with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Groningen.

New members are elected annually based on their academic performance and being proposed by the academic community. Members of the Academy are prominent academic researchers, working in all fields of scholarly research.

The three new members at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences are:
in the Science Division (mathematics and physics, life sciences and technical sciences)

  • Prof. Hein de Baar (1949), professor of Oceanography, University of Groningen; senior researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research
  • Prof. Thomas Palstra (1958), professor of Chemistry, University of Groningen, director of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials

In the Humanities and Social Sciences Division (humanities, law, behavioural sciences and social sciences)

  • Prof. Hans van der Plicht (1951), professor by special appointment in Isotope Chronology, University of Groningen, and professor by special appointment in Isotope Archaeology, University of Leiden

The new Academy members will be installed on Monday 13 September.

The KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) has an independent role in protecting the quality and interests of the arts and sciences and advises the Dutch government. The Academy is also responsible for nineteen internationally renowned institutes whose research and collections are at the vanguard of Dutch academia. The KNAW is therefore considered to be the authority and platform for Dutch academia.
