In Suriname, a developing country with a multi-cultural society, the elderly population grows annually. However, also the number of lifestyle related diseases such as heart- and coronary diseases, diabetes mellitus type II, cancer and obesity. A physically inactive lifestyle is an important risk factor for these diseases. Physical activity can to a large extend prevent these diseases and affect fitness positively which is important for the elderly to function independently. Results of this study show a first impression of the effects of a physical activity programme for the elderly in suriname. No other study into the effects of a physical activity programme for the elderly has been done before in a developing country.
