The main research question of this thesis was to study genetic aberrations in lung tissue in relation to smoke and COPD. Inhaled cigarette smoke will first contact the bronchial epithelial cells of the lungs. In this thesis project we investigated which gene expression changes occurred in these epithelial cells as a consequence of smoking and which changes occurred in the epithelial cells in COPD patients.
