Deepsea neutrino telescope Antares completed

In the night of 29 to 30 May 2008 a submarine has installed the final detector lines of the Antares neutrino telescope at the bottom of the Mediterranean . The first measurements followed shortly after the completion of the largest neutrino detector of the northern hemisphere. The Netherlands , including the KVI, has played an important role in the design and the construction of this salient instrument, mainly by the development of an entirely new concept for the read-out and analysis of the data. With this new telescope scientists can for the first time explore the origin of high-energy neutrinos in a systematic way. It is expected that these originate from immense cosmic explosions (supernovae or gamma-ray bursts) of collisions between dark-matter particles in the centre of the Milky Way.
