Professor of Neurology Erik Scherder ‘Lecturer of the Year’

07 February 2008

Prof. Erik Scherder of the UMCG was elected University of Groningen Lecturer of the Year on Wednesday 6 February 2008. Scherder, a lecturer in Neuropsychology in the Human Movement Sciences degree programme, convinced both the jury and the audience with an inspiring lecture on pain stimuli and pain perception in Alzheimer’s patients. With his intimate and informative lecture he managed to convey both his fascination for research and his empathy with the patient to the audience.

Scherder won thanks to his enthusiasm, although he encountered strong competition on this front. Whether they were discussing graffiti in ancient Pompeii, the number of zeros in a vector space or a roadside  monument giving meaning to a characterless polder country, all the nominees were enthusiastic storytellers with a strong sense of drama and theatre.

Prize

The University of Groningen organizes the Lecturer of the Year election to promote the attention paid to teaching. It is often felt that high-quality research is given priority over high-quality teaching at universities. The popularity of teaching has lately been making a strong comeback. The university awards the prize, which consists of EUR 7,500 and a bronze statuette by the artist Natasja Bennink, to express its appreciation of good lecturers.
