Exhibition University Museum: The Colours of China

06 February 2008

Traditional costumes and jewellery from China. 8 February - 14 September 2008

In the year of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the University Museum of Groningen exhibits an impressive collection of more than a hundred brightly-coloured Chinese costumes and matching jewellery.

The displayed garments and jewels were worn on festive and religious occasions. They contrast sharply with the widely-known plain and austere Mao-uniform.

The exhibition focuses on the variation in festive dresses among ethnic groups and regions of China. Most of them have never been displayed outside of China before. Attention is also payed to the religion of the Chinese people.
