New academic year University of Groningen opens with eminence

Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands , prominent newspaper columnist Jan Blokker and Deputy Minister Bruno Bruins will be leading the University of Groningen into the new academic year.The University of Groningen traditionally celebrates the beginning of the new academic year by attracting keynote speakers connected to the university or its faculty’s themes.  

On 5 September 2006 Princess Máxima’s speaks at the opening of the faculties of Management & Organization and Economics about her involvement with increasing participation of women of ethnic minorities, fitting in with this year’s theme “Companies, Business and Diversity”. The significance of Arts in society is addressed in a lecture at the Faculty of Arts each year, on 31 August this year featuring the opinion of Jan Blokker who is well-known in the Netherlands as a journalist, author and publicist.  

The opening of the new year at the University of Groningen consists of separate celebrations at each faculty and a central ceremony on 4 September 2006 during which Rector Magnificus Prof. Dr. Frans Zwarts officially opens the Academic Year.University alumnus and Deputy Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Bruno Bruins returns to Groningen to attend this year’s central ceremony.
