Mariana Yampolsky. Photographer of 20th-century Mexico

This small exhibition shows an overview of photo's taken in Mexico by American photographer Marianne Gertrude Yampolsky (1925-2002). They offer a unique insight into Mexican society of the mid-20th century: whether in posed portraits or candid images, Yampolsky masterfully captures everyday intimacy.
Her photographs reflect powerful familial and community relationships, but are also a testament to the strong connections established between the photographer and her subjects. While firmly rooted in the Mexican context, her works capture universal themes that speak to us across cultures and are still strikingly relevant to our present time.
In 2022 Yamplosky’s archive was declared part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme which preserves and promotes documentary heritage of particular importance. This exhibition aims to showcase and promote Yampolsky’s work as a pioneering woman photographer.
This exhibition was conveived and organised by the Mexico Study Centre of the University of Groningen in co-operation with the Mexican Embassy in The Netherlands, Universidad Iberoamericana, and the University Museum Groningen.
