The MA programme Religion, Conflict and Globalization consists of a compulsory introductory course (10 ECTS), a compulsory course unit on Research Methods (5 ECTS), three course units depending on your specialization (15 ECTS) and a thesis (20 ECTS). 10 ECTS are reserved for a practical placement.
In the introductory course, you will be introduced to the dominant theoretical approaches applied to the study of religion, conflict and globalization. You will learn to use a variety of disciplinary approaches including anthropology, political sociology, political philosophy and International Relations. This course also stresses the significance of 'culture', 'society', 'politics' and 'power', both as contested concepts and as factors affecting relationships amongst religion, conflict and globalization.
In the Social Scientific Research methods module, you will learn the necessary research skills you need for your own research project in the second semester.
Besides these two compulsory modules, you choose a specialization module and two out of five course units: 'Global Dynamics and Local Cosmologies: Studying Religious Change', 'Religion and the Politics of Human Rights', 'Politics of Secularism', 'Gender, Religion and Sexual Nationalism', 'Forced Migration'.

Conflict and Peacebuilding (specialisatie)
You will follow one specialization module: 'Religion, Violence and Conflict Transformation'.
In this module, you will learn to understand the relationship between religion, conflict and peace-building as well as acquire some skills in conflict transformation and peacebuilding. The following themes and elements will be interrogated: the discourse and practice of peacebuilding and conflict transformation; the history and development of religious violence; religion and reconciliation; transitional justice and religion; fundamentalism and religious violence; women, religion and peacebuilding; religion, ritual and peacebuilding. Case studies such as South Africa, Israel/Palestine, Zimbabwe, and Northern Ireland will be used to facilitate analyses.
Additionally, you will choose two out of five course units.

Gender (specialisatie)
You will follow one specialization module: 'Religion, Gender and Sexuality'.
In this module, you will analyze how religion and culture are implicated in the formation of gendered subjects and sexual identities through a discussion of anthropological and philosophical literature, as well as literature on intersectionality. You will learn to recognize current positions in debates on religion, sexuality and gendered embodiment and analyze how they are linked to social and political formations.
Additionally, you will choose two out of five course units.

Migration (specialisatie)
You will follow one specialization module: `Migration, Culture and Religious Identity´.
In this module, you will learn to analyze the influence of processes of globalization on feelings of home and belonging among people with a migration background. The themes will be studied from psychological and anthropological perspectives. In your endpaper, you will apply the theoretical framework discussed in class to analyse a novel or memoir written by a diasporic author.
Additionally, you will choose two out of five course units.
