Literary and cultural studies

Are you curious, eager to learn and ready to shape the role of the arts and the media in society and culture? Then you are the right person for this Research Master!

The two-year Master's track in Literary and Cultural Studies is a specialization within the Research Master's degree in Arts and Culture.

Literary and Cultural Studies equips students with knowledge and skills to become researchers and experts on the role that the arts, literature and media play in society, now and in the past. The programme offers a rich multi- and interdisciplinary framework within which students can specialize in one of the following disciplines or combinations of disciplines, under close supervision of a highly qualified research faculty:

  • arts and culture education,
  • cognitive studies of arts, media and culture,
  • cultural studies,
  • digital humanities,
  • film studies,
  • history of art, architecture and landscape,
  • literary studies
  • media and journalism studies,
  • music studies,
  • theatre and performance studies.

To better reflect the breadth of disciplines involved, the track will be called Arts, Media, and Literary Studies from 2018/2019 onwards.

    Freedom

In my research master Literary and Cultural Studies, I focus on the interaction between artist, art and the beholder, how does art move us, and the way we are literally and figuratively moved. I chose this research master because it provides the opportunity to explore these interconnections in depth while offering the freedom to chose from a wide range of possibilities to broaden my horizon. There are only a few core courses and together with the staff, you can design your own programme according to interests, curiosities and needs. For example, I have the chance to do a research internship at the Max-Planck-Institute for empirical aesthetics in Frankfurt, within the framework of the research master.

    Theory and methods

Literary and Cultural Studies focusses especially on theory and methods: within small groups of fellow students and professors with diverse research interests, these are discussed and reflected on a lot. The programme is challenging and demands a lot of reading, critical thinking and academic writing. At the same time, it takes you a step further in your own development of research skills. I chose this programme at the University of Groningen because it offers this precise and in-depth knowledge of theories and methods that I feel I need for academic research. And I would definitely recommend this research master to students who are eager and curious to learn and understand the role of arts in our society.
