The MSc in IFM broadens my academic horizon

I thought it was important for my personal development to take my Master's degree abroad.

The advantage of the MSc in International Financial Management is that it combines two Master's degrees in the space of one and a half years. You take International Financial Management in Groningen in the first semester and the MSc in Business & Economics in Uppsala in Sweden in the second semester. Another attractive feature of the MSc in IFM is that it broadens my academic horizon by providing financial insights under a managerial lens, as well as dealing with all subjects in the programme in an international framework. In the end the double programme turned out to be a perfect combination. In Groningen the emphasis was on academic theory, whereas the programme in Uppsala had a more practical slant.

"The main thing I learned was that it is really important to have your own opinion about certain issues, but even more important to know how to defend your opinions."

"The Double Degree programme adds an extra dimension to the international character of the MSc in IFM. I would advise everybody to study abroad. The main thing I learned during my Master's was that it is really important to have your own opinion about certain issues, but even more important to know how to defend your opinions. Especially once I'd gained more knowledge of the field, the open debates became my favourite part of the programme. I consider the level of this programme above average as it gets the best out of you – so be ready for a challenge.

I found my current job in less than a month because I was recommended by a friend already working in the same department of the company. As I work in the management consulting area, there are a lot of unpredictable situations and I have to adapt immediately to the clients' needs. My current job is actually more closely linked to my Master's than I expected. Firstly, the content of the Master's contributed to my knowledge of the management area: understanding the basic concepts within the field by showing the big picture of how a company is organized. And at a more technical level, it contributed to the knowledge about some of the key tools (management tools, financial tools, etc.)."

The European Career Tour - a memorable experience!

In Sweden, I was selected to join the European Career Tour which was organized by Uppsala Ekonomerna (Uppsala Business & Economics Student Association). For one week, we visited several multinational companies in Amsterdam, London and Dublin as a means of career preparation. The trip turned out to be a memorable and valuable experience.

The Career Tour started on Sunday with a flight to Amsterdam, where we spent the first day. It was great to get to know so many ambitious and like-minded students. On our second day, we visited Arcadis and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce. Afterwards, we flew to London where we visited PwC and GANT. During an “after work mingle” at GANT, I had the opportunity to meet an employee from the financial department to get an idea of what work in finance at GANT is like. This was very insightful and informative. The following morning, we visited Nasdaq where we received an interesting view into the world of financial services. In the afternoon, we flew to Dublin where we visited LinkedIn and Google. Visiting these companies was the absolute highlight of the trip! At LinkedIn, we were given a brief presentation about the company, followed by a discussion between us and a couple of employees; it turned out that four of them had been participants of the Career Tour just two years ago! Afterwards, we visited Google where we were given an elaborate tour of the office – rooftop swings, a swimming pool and gym – they have it all! Throughout the career tour, all interested students were given access to Googles’ University program. This is a significant advantage over the regular application process. On Friday, we visited Oracle and Mazars and spontaneously mingled with employees of LinkedIn in town. Such a great opportunity to have a casual chat! On Saturday we were free to explore Dublin until we caught the plane back to Stockholm.

The European Career tour brought so much perspective to what is possible with a degree in finance! The connections that I have made with the other participants and employees are priceless. It was definitely one of the highlights of my double degree in Uppsala.
