Over Rosa
Hoi! Ik ben Rosa, ik ben 21 jaar en ik zit momenteel in mijn derde jaar van de Academische Opleiding Leraar Basisonderwijs.

Op de middelbare school wist ik al dat ik iets sociaals wilde studeren. Ik had het profiel E&M gekozen, omdat dit goed paste bij de vakken die ik interessant vond. Om mijn studiekeuze te maken heb ik veel open dagen bezocht, maar deze brachten mij vaak meer vragen dan antwoorden. Veel studies leken mij namelijk interessant, alleen miste ik een praktisch en inzetbaar gedeelte. Gelukkig kwam ik na een tijdje bij een voorlichting over de AOLB terecht. Hier werd ik meteen enthousiast van.

Bij de AOLB leer je op zowel theoretische als praktische wijze over onderwijs, opvoeding en kinderen. Naast colleges en zelfstudie, loop je stage in een basisschoolklas. Op stage leer je vooral door van alles uit te proberen, van kinderconflicten oplossen tot rekeninstructies geven. Tijdens de colleges leer je wat er achter deze praktijk zit: hoe werkt het en waarom doen we het zo?

Ik ben heel blij met mijn keuze voor de AOLB, omdat ik het onderwijs en het werken met kinderen heel tof vind. De combinatie van theorie en praktijk motiveert mij enorm tijdens de studie. Ik ben eerst gaan studeren in een andere stad, maar omdat ik me hier niet thuis voelde, heb ik uiteindelijk toch voor Groningen gekozen. Groningen is een echte studentenstad, waardoor het altijd gezellig is en je er makkelijk vrienden kan maken.

Hoi! Mijn naam is Ate en ik zit op dit moment in het vierde jaar van de Academische Pabo (AOLB). Ik heb ondertussen in alle groepen van de basisschool stagegelopen en al veel vakken op de opleiding gevolgd. About Rutger
Hi! My name is Rutger Renkema, I am twenty years old and currently in my third year of the Bachelor American Studies. I have been living in Groningen since 2022, after moving here from Steenwijk. I love to go out to get coffee with friends and thrifting. My favorite movie is Scream – a movie that you can watch for one of the American Studies courses!

Why American Studies?
I chose American Studies because of its diversity and interdisciplinarity, and my broader interest in American culture and politics. I was pleasantly surprised how you are not just studying history, politics, economics or sociology, but all of these, simultaneously. American Studies is a field that thrives on interdisciplinary exploration. Instead of confining yourself to a single perspective, branch out and immerse yourself in history, literature, sociology, politics, art, and more. You can really dive into the hidden corners of American history and uncover narratives that challenge conventional ideas. You also dig into the stories of underrepresented communities, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other marginalized groups whose stories have often been overlooked. During high school, I always thought the United States was really interesting, and really had an interest in it. This doesn’t mean that you have to be extremely interested in the US of course. It often shows more extreme forms of social problems we encounter here in Europe, which is why this study is more relevant to non-Americans than you might think. You also get to study Latin America and Canada, which is a great bonus! I am also planning on doing my minor in the US, which is a unique opportunity to live in the US and experience the culture firsthand. You also get priority to go to American universities over other students.

About Lia
Hi everyone! My name is Lia. I am 20 years old and I am the child of autumn. I am from Moldova and I deeply care about my background and roots. I am a second-year BA Art History student and I am also enrolled in the Honours College programme. I write poetry and read to soothe my soul, and visit local museums every time I travel. I love Pilates and I walk a lot because it helps me relax. Last but not least, I prefer sunflowers over roses.

Why Art History?
The personalised approach of this programme develops your understanding of human society and culture, whilst shaping your critical analysis and perspective on art, architecture, and landscapes. It covers a broad historical background and helps you understand the chronological development of art. At the same time, the variety of courses, from ‘Beyond Antiquity’ to ‘Art Now,’ provide socio-political commentary on historical events that have shaped humanity. The courses cover a wide range of topics and methodologies that provide a framework for your approach to art history. If you are not sure about your specific field of interest, the programme will help you find which particular region, time period, or movement your wish to specialise in. Whenever someone asks me ‘Why do you study Art History?’, I remember a quote from ‘Dead Poets Society’ that says, ‘Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.’

About Julie
Hi, my name is Julie and I’m twenty years old. I am currently in my third year of the bachelor Art History and last year I started with a second bachelor European Laguages and Culture.

For me the decision to study Art History became very clear when I heard a professor give a lecture at an open day. This instantly made me so enthusiastic that the interest I had in other bachelors dropped. My family has always been very artistic; my father also studied Art History and my sister is currently studying at the art academy Minerva. I was raised with art and always encouraged to do something with it. The thing I like most about Art History is that it includes people from all over the world with very different backgrounds that all share the same passion for art. This makes that we are a very tight group. Art History is a very small programme, which makes it very personal.

The programme is also very diverse, in the first year you immediately go on different excursions and visit many museums. I enjoyed this very much in particular, because it will bring you closer to the things you learn and you get an idea as to where you might end up after your studies.

About Isabelle
At first, Artificial Intelligence was meant to be my backup. I tried to get into a music program with a very strict selection procedure. I didn’t get in, so I went to Groningen to study Artificial Intelligence. I had ben looking at studies related to science for a while, but I was always afraid that I would get tired of the technical and mathematical subjects after a while, or that I wouldn’t be able to do it. When I found Artificial Intelligence ( I hadn’t heard of it before), I knew it was the right choice for me. Because it’s such a broad topic, there’s enough variation for me to never get bored! I am currently in my third year of the bachelor and I’m very glad I ended up here.

Hello! My name is Max van der Kooi and I am an Arts, Culture and Media (ACM) student. I am currently in my second year, specializing in Music and Visual Arts. Outside of my studies, I work part-time and I am a member of the Study Association IK. When I am not busy with work or studies, I game with friends or sometimes work on music at home.

Why Arts, Culture and Media?
Arts, Culture and Media spoke to me because of its variety of topics. I have an appreciation for all different types of art, but some interest me more than others do, so being able to focus on the disciplines I have the most interest in really stood out to me. The programme also lets you choose a specialization in the second year: Arts, Analysis and Criticism, or Arts, Policy and Cultural Entrepreneurship. I chose for Arts, Policy and Cultural Entrepreneurship, because of my interest in event management and the community aspects of art. The programme does not ask you to be ‘’good’’ at producing art, which I also like. I have tried making my own music, but I would not dare to send it to someone.

About Bo
Hi! My name is Bo, I am 21 years old and I just finished my Bachelor’s in Communication and Information Studies! Since I cannot get enough of studying, I extended my studies by one year to complete another Minor and internship. Besides my studies, I am an active member of both rowing and basketball associations in Groningen. I also work as a student assistant at the Department of Communication for the Faculty of Economics and Business.

Why Communication and Information Studies?
When it was time to choose my study programme, I was incredibly uncertain because my references changed every week! Did I want to study Law? Business Administration? Or even Medicine? Since I already heard many stories about those studies, I wanted to visit a lesser-known programme during the Open Day at the UG. That is why I choose to visit the Bachelor’s Communication and Information Studies. The presentation really grabbed my attention - the programme offers so many different fields: language and corporate communication, but also courses on digital communication. All these aspects sparked my interest and I immediately knew this was the right choice for me after months of twisting and turning!

Over Imaji
Hi! My name is Imaji Kasih Ayunda Rizal, but everyone calls me Imaji. I come from Jakarta, Indonesia, and I'm currently a second-year student in the Data Science and Society program. My academic journey at Campus Fryslan began in September 2022. Apart from my studies, I'm actively involved with the Indonesian student association in Leeuwarden and Groningen. This year, I'm taking on the role of chairing the Indonesian Day event. Additionally, I enjoy my part-time work with the University. Beyond my academic commitments, I occasionally read books, play the piano, and draw.

I chose this program because I was initially seeking an IT-focused field and explored various universities across the Netherlands. What captivated me about this particular program is its relevance and its comprehensive approach, considering both the technical and societal aspects of data. Since joining, I've encountered numerous exciting opportunities. Moving to the Netherlands was a significant decision, but the warm and welcoming community I discovered here made the adjustment smoother for me.

Hi! My name is Noortje, I am 22 years old, and I have just started my final year of Econometrics and Operations Research (EOR). Before studying EOR, I initially spent a year studying psychology, so I didn't make the 'right' study choice immediately. Fortunately, after a lot of exploring, researching, and asking others, I found the study that suits me! Because there is so much choice, I totally understand that making a study choice is not always easy. When choosing EOR, I mainly focused on what I really like and what I am good at (mathematics in my case). By keeping this in mind, my choice eventually fell on Econometrics and Operations Research, and I really enjoy it!

When I was still in high school, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. I was good at math and I liked economics, so I thought I'd give it a try. In the end, it was a good choice and I am really enjoying it now!

I am actively involved in my study association and I play football here in Groningen. What also makes it more fun is that Groningen is the nicest student city in the Netherlands!

Hi, my name is Geert Douwe and I have just finished the bachelor Economics and Business Economics. This programme was the best combination of my interest in society and mathematical skills. This study provided me with three choices for specialization, from which I have done the finance and economics side. In the end my specialization became economic development and globalization. This provide me with the most societal perspective on economics.

Hi! My name is Nora de Beer and I am a third-year student of English Language and Culture. I am also an active member of our study association NUTS. Why English Language and Culture?
As an avid reader growing up, I was always interested in languages, so when my high school English teacher suggested I look into studying English, I was hooked. I went to Open Days and Student for a Day events and I loved it. My initial favourite subjects were literature-related, as I had expected. However, very soon I fell in love with linguistics and that has since become my main focus.

Hello! My name is Lana Fahham, and I am 20 years old. I am currently in my third year of the European Languages and Cultures BA programme. I am taking English as my major language and following both the Language & Society and the Culture & Literature profiles. In my free time I enjoy reading, watching a movie/series, and swimming. Why European Languages and Cultures?
I chose this programme because it is quite broad. I have always been interested in different languages, cultures, and literature. I found everything I like and enjoy within this programme. It was quite hard for me to choose what I wanted to study and what suited my interests, but when I visited the Open Day of ELC, I just knew that this programme was the perfect fit for me. There is so much variation and options to choose from regarding languages, subjects, and profiles. Aside from choosing a major language and main profile, you can also take courses in a second language or profile. The three profiles are: Politics & Society, Language & Society, and the Culture & Literature. I found the last two suited me perfectly, because they go in hand with my hobbies and interests. Due to the huge variation within this programme, you do not only develop a broad and critical perspective on Europe, but on the entire world. Hence, the broadness of this programme leads to many opportunities within and after your studies, which is exactly what I wanted.

Hello everyone! My name is Cătălina, and I am 20 years old. I am from Moldova, and I have a deep appreciation for my cultural heritage. I am in my first year of the European Languages and Cultures BA programme, but I am doing a double Bachelor’s, combining it with the BA IRIO. I chose Spanish as my major language, as I have always wanted to manoeuvre such a melodious language. At the same time, I am taking Russian classes, which I find fascinating. I dance in my free time and adore reading and watching movies and series. Additionally, I love travelling and discovering the cultural richness of various societies.

Why European Languages and Cultures?
Throughout my life, I have developed a profound passion for culture, literature and languages, and their impact on societal norms and views. Hence, European Languages and Cultures aligned perfectly with my interests. At first, I was not sure if applying was a good idea, as I was already doing another Bachelor’s degree, which is why I decided to participate in the Web class. For a month I had the opportunity to delve into the subjects of ELC, getting to explore one profile per week. As a literary enthusiast myself, I was looking forward to the Culture & Literature profile, and I can confidently say that my expectations were highly surpassed. Getting to explore society through a literary lens, examining the influence of texts on world politics, and analysing contemporary issues depicted through art are the highlights of my experience.

However, the programme is not limited to literary courses. The three profiles vary on the spectrum, by covering a vast spectrum of themes. From major literary themes and criticism (Culture & Literature profile) to language intricacies (Language & Society profile) and political discourse (Politics & Society), the programme develops a critical view of Europe from a multilateral perspective.

Hi guys! My name is Helena Hamera and I am a second year GRL student. I am a very open and curious person, which is why GRL was a perfect fit for me. Since I can remember, I have been interested in many fields of studies and life. I am fascinated by psychology, but on the other hand, I am also interested in global politics and economy. Thanks to the GRL's interdisciplinary curriculum, I can combine further learning about both of the disciples and many more. Furthermore, our programme not only combines many disciplines but also connects all of them by its focus on global challenges and local solutions, which I believe is the right approach to have in this complex world of ours:)

Studying GRL at UCF not only brings about academic benefits but also social ones. We study and live here in a one-of-a-kind, very inclusive, and loving community. This, in turn, not only creates futuristic professional connections but also personal ones.

Hi my name is Madison (but you can just call me Maddie)! I just started my third year of my Bachelor's degree. I am all the way from Indiana in the U.S. and I came here to study History (in the International track of course). I am very involved in the study association for History, Ubbo Emmius, and I do various martial arts in Groningen. Why History?
I find history fascinating because everyone sees things in a different way in history so you can take the same exact event and write thousands of different essays from all kinds of perspectives and all of those essays could be true at the same time. Learning about history (and why we remember what we do) can tell us so much about our current society. Nothing in the past is preserved by accident, everything is kept, or erased, for a reason.

About Michelle
Heey! I am Michelle, I am 20 years old and currently in my third year of studying International Business. In high school, I chose a wide range of subjects (Science and Technology with Economics) because I wasn't sure of the career I wanted to pursue. Many studies seemed interesting to me, both social and technical ones. Luckily, I stumbled upon the open day of International Business after a while. It's a very broad study that allows you to explore various career paths in the future.

In IB, you learn a little bit of everything. One big advantage of this program is that you get to spend half a year abroad! It's a mandatory part of your bachelor's degree. For me, this meant studying in New Zealand for the past six months, where I had the time of my life.

Furthermore, the program has a strong focus on an international perspective, which makes it quite different from business administration: when can a company start selling its products internationally, and what should the company consider in this process? This is an important question that you'll often answer in the IB program. I also enjoy learning about different cultures: for example, if you go on a business trip to Japan, it's considered impolite to shake hands, and instead, a bow is expected.

My name is Liz Winterhalter and I am a student in the International Relations and International Organizations Bachelor’s programme. I was born in the United States but was raised mainly across the Middle East and Europe. This cosmopolitan start to my life has motivated me to pursue the study of politics and of course take a major interest in the languages and cultures of the world. As far as hobbies go, I love going to the gym, playing video games, drawing, knitting, and playing chess. Additionally, next to my studies, I am an active member of the IRIO study association Clio.

Why IRIO?
I chose the IRIO programme here at the University of Groningen because I saw so much potential in the classes that are provided. Due to my background of moving, I had absolutely no geographical limit to where I could place my application, but Groningen spoke to me for three main reasons. The first reason is that the courses within the programme are specific. With IR studies in general, they tend to be very broad, so seeing that the individual courses are all for a specific field was very intriguing. Secondly, I loved the built-in language course to study. Language learning is a huge passion of mine, and having another language in the field of IR is an invaluable skill. Lastly, the overall flexible course structure, and the ability to have a bachelor's degree that can really be supplemented with anything additional you wish to take is a huge advantage.

My name is Sofie, I am 19 years old and since 2020 I have been studying International Relations & International Organization (IRIO) at the University of Groningen. In my spare time I take boxing classes at the student organization ACLO and participate in fun activities organized by Study Association Clio.

Why IRIO?
I chose IRIO because I am interested in how the international world works. I would like to learn how countries and international organizations interact with each other, how international cooperation arises, and what causes international conflicts. IRIO seems the best study for this, because it has courses on history, politics, law and economics. Because of these different perspectives, you gain insight into all aspects of the international world. Moreover, these perspectives result in a varied programme that is never boring! I am also very enthusiastic about the foreign language as part of the IRIO programme, because I believe foreign language skills can be very useful in an international career. Ultimately, an international career is my ultimate goal and the IRIO study seems like a good starting point to achieve that.

Hi! I’m Andele, 20 years old and a third year Life Science and Technology student. When I was in your position of choosing a study, I struggled quite a bit due to the enormous amount of possibilities. Hi! I’m Daria, I’m 20 years old and I’m a second year LS&T student. Science has been a constant passion of mine since I was young. My favourite subjects in high school were chemistry, biology and mathematics, so I really wanted to study something that would combine them. Life Science and Technology has proved to be the best choice for me, since it is an interdisciplinary programme that focuses on both theory and practical skills. Apart from studying, I am also active in the study association GLV Idun and I have made great memories with the friends I met here, in Groningen. About Melissa
Hi! My name is Melissa Jongman, I am a third-year student of the BA Media Studies programme. I really enjoy politics and all sorts of music and film. Besides this I like reading books, painting, dancing and playing volleyball. I am an active member at a student association, where I made a lot of friends. In addition to studying, I work multiple jobs at the University, which I really enjoy.

Why Media Studies?
At first, I had some doubts about what to study. I knew I wanted something modern, close to my interests and related to society. When I went to the Open Day for Media Studies everything clicked. The study is very up-to-date and keeps on renewing itself in topics that are relevant in the time we live, making it way more interesting to write about the topics for assignments. The classes are very interactive and make it easy to make friends. The study is about everything that can be considered media, from books, to films, from music, to photos. In the first year you go over every different facet of media and in the second year you can choose what you find most interesting about media. This is what makes the study so much fun, you get an understanding about everything related to media and the connection to society. It is so interesting to see how society is impacted by everything happening online and how that changes the way we look at the world. For me it was most interesting to learn about feminism, the way scenes are staged and learning how to write both academically as professionally.

Hi! My name is Meike, I'm 22 years old and I'm currently in my last year of the BA Religious Studies at the University of Groningen.

Younger me had difficulty choosing my next studies after graduating from my secondary education. It took me some time and a gap year to find out what I really wanted. When I was orienting for my next studies at the university I soon found out I had a deep interest in different degrees within the social sciences. I found myself bouncing between psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and humanistics but thought all these programs were not 100% it - they lacked a kind of interdisciplinary aspect. I had never heard of Religious Studies. It was just by accident that someone told me about this program and advised me to visit an Open Day or join a Student for a Day event. After doing so, I realised Religious Studies combined all the fields of studies I was initially interested in. My study choice was quickly made and so began my career in Religious Studies.

Flash forward to current me, I can say my choice to study Religious Studies was one of the best ones ever made. Looking back on the last three years, I can definitely say some things about my experiences of the programme and the student life at our faculty. The study programme is very broad and is really aimed to educate its students to become broadly and critical social scientists. In a nutshell, the first year consists of introductory courses to the five world religions and courses on analytical perspectives within the study of religion, such as sociology, psychology, anthropology and philosophy. These courses serve as a kind of background for the second year which is meant to dive deeper into different subjects within the field of religious studies. These courses focus for example on how religion manifests itself in a modern day society but also how religion has contributed to societies as we know them today. The last year's programme consists of minor courses and writing your thesis.

Then there is the student life at the faculty which is very worth mentioning as well. Coming from a small town and being used to a small community during my secondary education, I was hoping I wouldn't become a so-called anonymous student during my next studies. The faculty of Religion, Culture and Society is small but it has an open and ´gezellige´ atmosphere. There are many options for students if they would like to be more active within the faculty, such as the opportunity to join one of the study associations committees. What I like most is the close contact between my classmates and other students but also between the students and our teachers. I think everyone at our faculty really appreciates the open and accessible culture.

Hello! I am Myrthe, 19 years old, and currently studying in my second year of the study ‘Spatial planning and Design’. My adventure started with numerous open days and city visits, from The Hague to Amsterdam, Utrecht and finally Groningen.

At first it was a jumble of interesting subjects and directions, but history and geography always seemed the most interesting to me. The atmosphere in Groningen really attracted me, therefore I decided to look further into this city. After an intensive search I came across the studies ‘Spatial planning and Design’ and ‘Human Geography and Planning’ - exactly what I was searching for! After spending a day with the studies and a web class I was convinced. Spatial planning and design really stood out to me and fit me better, after that the choice was made.
Now, in the middle of my studies, I feel completely at home in Groningen. I have a very nice group of friends and am also active within my study association Ibn Battuta!

About Vanessa
As someone who was always fascinated by how people interact and how the built environment has an influence on our behavior and feelings, I decided to study Spatial Planning and Design at the University of Groningen.

In our degree we get many opportunities to deepen our academic knowledge in relevant topics, and at the same time we get a lot of team work experience that portrays the actual working environment of a Spatial Planner. It is a degree that covers not only the planning and designing part but also the history and sociology of it, while being positively challenging without compromising your own creativity. A highlight of this study are the Fieldworks and Ateliers that will offer you the tools for a great professional skill set afterwards.

Hello! My name is Adam Bahelka. I am now in my 2nd year at UCG with a free Major. However, most of my courses are a combination of Economics and IT. Over Isaac
Hoi! Ik ben Isaac, ik ben tweedejaars student archeologie aan de RUG en ik woon op kamers in de stad. Ik heb het erg naar mijn zin op de opleiding en ben ook lid van de studievereniging Bachur. Ik vind lezen en sporten erg leuk, ik ben lid van Tjas (de schaatsvereniging) en van de GSAC (de klimvereniging). Ik ben zelf altijd druk bezig met van alles, ik werk op festivals door heel Nederland dus ik kom ook nog eens ergens.

Waarom archeologie?
Ik wilde in eerste instantie archeologie doen omdat ik geschiedenis op de middelbare school erg leuk vond. Nu ik bezig ben vind ik het een heerlijke combinatie van onderzoek doen, puzzelen en lekker buiten aan de slag zijn. Ik vind vooral de prehistorie erg interessant en ga me daar ook in specialiseren vanaf dit jaar. Ik heb hiervoor een jaar de HBO-opleiding archeologie aan Saxion gevolgd en hoewel ik dat ook echt heel leuk vond, voel ik mij op mijn plek bij de bachelor archeologie aan de RUG.
