Hosting Worlds Together: (Un)learning from doing “Diversity” at the Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam  

Today, Universitiesand research centers across the world are facing public scrutiny on the role that they have historically played in silencing or promoting plurality in approaches to knowledge production and inclusive environments where everybody can feel at home. For 65 years, the Institute of Social Studies, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam, but based in the City of the Hague has been a place for the encounter of an incredibly rich diversity of peoples. The plurality of nationalities, life experiences, knowledge trajectories and pedagogical traditions that have converged at ISS is one of our most important qualities. This diversity is what makes us special and unique in the Netherlands, Europe and the Global North.

In this presentation, I will share some key learning opportunities that emerge from establishing the first D&I team in ISS’s 65+ year history and of working towards the implementation of 3 focal points for action: Accessibility, Awareness, Addressing+Redressing Unbalanced Representations.

Rosalba Icaza is a decolonial feminist teacher-researcher-activist based at the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam where she is Associate Professor in Global Politics, Gender and Diversity and Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Team.

Rosalba also collaborates with the Universidad de la Tierra, Oaxaca (Land University Oaxaca) and is member of the Transnational Network Other Knowledges (RETOS). Rosalba explains her research agenda as one that seeks to understand how place-based social resistances contribute to global epistemic justice.

Her four different but interconnected areas of research are:

  • decolonial thinking and ‘the international,
  • thinking the academia in the promotion of autonomy,
  • learning as liberation/liberation of learning and
  • plural feminisms for plural liberations.
