UG subscribes to ‘Opening the Future’ programme

06 October 2021

The UG now subscribes to the Opening the Future collective funding programme of Central European Press (CEU). The programme is a novel variant of the subscribe to open model (S2O) aimed at realizing a sustainable transition to open access for books.

Under the terms of the subscription, UG’s staff and students will get unlimited, perpetual access to 100 ebooks in CEU Press’s backlist (in particular the University of Groningen Library subscribed to the History and Political Sciences packages). In return, CEU Press will use the subscription fees to fund new open access books, to be made freely available globally. They aim to eventually publish around 25 open access books per year, and already have enough funding for 5 books since launching the programme.

Established in 1993, CEU Press is widely recognised as the foremost English language university press dedicated to research on Central and Eastern Europe and the former communist countries. It publishes 25 new monographs and research-based edited collections a year with a backlist of over 450 titles.
