New open access deal with Elsevier

16 January 2020

The VSNU and Elsevier have reached a new framework agreement. The agreement provides Dutch-affiliated researchers with reading access to Elsevier’s full journal portfolio and allows unlimited open access publication in more than 2,000 Elsevier journals – including fully open access ones. Compared to the previous deal, the number of journals where researchers can publish open access for free has been expanded significantly.

Eligibility for free open access publication depends on the date of submission to the journal. Researchers can check whether their publication is eligible for the discount via the Open Access Journal Browser.

The agreement is initially valid from 1 January 2020 through 1 May 2020. During these four months the terms of agreement will be elaborated. Upon successful outcome of the process, the agreement will be extended until the end of 2024.
