Frequently asked questions concerning limited services UB

Update as of 1 September

As a result of the relaxation of the corona measures, the number of study places in the University Library will be increased. The opening hours of the UB City Centre will be extended; coffee corners and terraces are open again. The UB Zernike will reopen on 1 September.

Update 16 August: UB open in the evening and during weekends

  • Monday- Sunday: 8.30 a.m. - 10 p.m.;
  • You can reach the Servicedesk by phone Monday through Friday, from 8.30 am until 5 pm via 050-3635020 or e-mail us at servicedesk-library rug.nl

The Special Collections research room is open by appointment only.

The Centre for Russian Studies (CRS) and the  Documentatiecentrum Politieke Partijen (DNPP) zijn weer op afspraak open voor bezoekers.

When is the UB open?

Opening hours

  • UB City Centre: Monday through Sunday, 8.30 am - 10 pm
    (you can pick up requested books in the Selfservice; requested DVDs and ILL books can be collected at the reception desk.
  • UB Zernike: Monday through Friday, 9.00 am - 5 pm


Lending requests are processed Mon-Fri only; when you receive our e-mail, you can pick up your book the next work day. Did you choose Tresoar as your pickup location? Then it will take up to 4 days before your book is available.

The research room Special Collections is open by appointment only.
The Central Medical Library (CMB) is open, see CMB.

When can I reach the UB by telephone?

The University Library can be reached by telephone from Monday to Friday between 8.30 am and 5 pm; please call 050-3635020. For questions about study places, please call the reception desk: 050-3635000 (8.30 am-10 pm).

Are the printers available in the UB?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the printers.

I would like to use the seminar shelves in the UB, is that possible?

It's possible again to use the materials on the seminar shelves for Theology and Arts.

I'm a PhD student and would like to submit the printed version of my dissertation, where can I do this now?

The printed version of your thesis (2 copies plus 2 copies of the propositions) can be handed in at the Service desk of the University Library or sent to our postal address.

I requested a library card. Where and when can I pick it up?

Library cards that have been requested online, can be picked up at the Service desk upon presentation of a valid ID during the usual opening hours.

In case a payment is required, this can only be done by PIN.

Requesting books

How long will it take before my request is available?

We strive to make the requested books from our closed stacks and reading rooms available to you after 24 hours.

When you receive our e-mail, you can pick up your book the next work day. Please check the current opening hours. Did you choose Tresoar as your pickup location? Then it will take up to 4 days before your book is available.

I would like to borrow a book that is stored in the UB Zernike, the Central Medical Library or Tresoar. Is this possible?

The UB Zernike en de CMB are open, so you can pick up the books yourself.

Books from Tresoar can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

I would like to consult a publication that is not lendable. Do I have to make an appointment for this?

If you wish to consult non-loanable UB materials from the closed stacks, the vault or the special collections room, or non-loanable publications from the reading rooms, you need to make an appointment with Special Collections. Lendable materials from the studyrooms have to be requested through SmartCat. You may consult the publications from the seminar shelves; you do need to make a reservation for a study place for this purpose, see also Seminar shelves Arts - Theology.

I requested an ILL-book or a DVD. Where and when can I pick it up?

You can collect your requested DVDs and ILL-books at the reception desk.

Returning books

Can I return my books?

Books can be returned via the 24/7 Bookbox at the outside of UB City Centre (Poststraat), at the Selfservice A or by sending them to:

You are resposible for proper shipping and shipping costs.

My books are due, but I cannot return my books in time. Will there be a fine?

For the time being we do not charge any fees for the late return of due books, at least until the end of the lockdown.

You may return books:

  • through the 24/7 book box located outside of the UB City Centre (Poststraat)
  • through the Selfservice in the UB City Centre

  • by mail to

The shipping costs will then be for your account.

Please note: Returned books will be processed as quickly as possible. The lending system may, however, take a few days to process the information.

I returned a book in the 24/7 Bookbox, but the book is still in my borrowed items' list. What can I do?

Returned books will be processed on the next working day. This means that books will only be checked in and removed from borrowed items' list after this.

You may return books:

  • through the 24/7 book box located outside of the UB City Centre (Poststraat)
  • through the Selfservice in the UB City Centre

    or
  • by mail to

The shipping costs will then be for your account.

Pick up books

Where can I pick up my reservation?

You can pick up or return books at the UB City Centre, the UB Zernike, the CMB or Tresoar. You will receive a ready-for-collection message stating the location where you can pick up the book.

Interlibrary loan (ILL)

Can I order books or copies from other libraries?

It is possible again to request books from other libraries, as well as articles from journals and chapters from printed books. As part of a pilot project the UG will pay for costs involved with requesting a copy from an e-journal via international inter llibrary loan (applies to both staff and students). However, we cannot guarantee that we will be always able to fulfill your request. After your request, we will keep you informed by e-mail.

Support finding literature and data

For my research or assignment I would like to get some help in finding literature. Where can I get support?

Can I use the online information resources/databases now that I'm at home?
