#Update 25 March: Frequently asked questions concerning limited services UB

All study rooms in the University Library (City Centre and Zernike) and the Central Medical Library (CMB) are closed until at least Friday 10 April.

Changed opening hours and changed services

All online services (including requesting literature via SmartCat) are available as usual through rug.nl/library and for the CMB via rug.nl/cmb.

When is the UB open?

All study rooms in the University Library (locations City Centre and Zernike) and the Central Medical Library (CMB) are closed until at least Friday 10 April. The self-service in the UB City Centre is open from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 12 pm (noon). The self-service is only available to pick up your requested books. Books can be handed in via the 24/7 book box on the outside of the building.

When can I reach the UB by telephone?

The University Library can only be reached by telephone from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 12 pm (noon): please call 050-3635020.

Are the printers available in the UB?

At the moment there is no printer available in the UB. We are open between 9 am and 12 pm (noon) exclusively to give borrowers the possibility to pick up requested books.

I'm a teacher and I have literature on the seminar shelves in the UB. Can students acces this literature?

The seminar shelves are currently not available for students. We cannot create a facility to make the books available for consultation. What is possible, however, is that you request the books yourself. You may also e-mail servicedesk-bibliotheek rug.nl to ask if we could make the books available for loan so that students could borrow the books.

I'm a PHD student and would like to submit the printed version of my dissertation, where can I do this now?
Due to the exceptional circumstances, we advise the PhD to hold on to the printed version for now, until the (new) date for the PhD ceremony has been confirmed. Handing in your thesis is still possible, please send the printed version (2 copies plus 2 copies of their propositions) to the University Library.

Please send the dissertations to the following address:

University Library
Dissertations department

Broerstraat 4
Postbus 559
9700 AN Groningen

Requesting books

How long will it take before my request is available?

We strive to make the requested books from our closed stacks and reading rooms available to you after 24 hours. Books that have been returned through our Bookbox however, are first held in quarantaine for five days before they are made available again in Self service A for the next borrower.

I would like to borrow a book that is stored in the Central Medical Library, UB Zernike or Tresoar. Is this possible?

No, this isn't possible. Because the Central Medical Library, UB Zernike and Tresoar are closed, books from their open shelves (in the reading rooms) are not available for loan. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I would like to consult a publication that is not lendable. Can I make an appointment for this?

No, this isn't possible. Non-lendable books are unfortunately not available right now.

I would like to apply for an extension of my books, how do I do this?

It is not necessary to apply for an extension for your books. Your loan period will be automatically extended unless it includes a reservation or if you have reached the maximum number of renewals. If an automatic renewal is not possible and you are unable to return the book, you do not have to do anything, we will waive any penalties for this period. For more information about renewals please visit: Renewal.

Returning books

Can I return my books?

Books can only be returned via the 24/7 Bookbox at the outside of UB City Centre (Poststraat). Please note: due to quarantine it takes 5 days before the book is retrieved from your name in the system. It is possible that within these 5 days you receive a reminder e-mail; please ignore this, any fines will be waived.

I cannot return the book at this time, can I ask to renew the book?

It is not necessary to apply for an extension for your books. Your loan period will be automatically extended unless it includes a reservation or if you have reached the maximum number of renewals. If an automatic renewal is not possible and you are unable to return the book, you do not have to do anything, we will waive any penalties for this period. For more information about renewals please visit: Renewal.

My books are due, but I cannot return my books in time. Will there be a fine?

Sending out reminders is an automatic process in our system. However, given the situation, fines will be waived if you are unable to return the books. You do not have to e-mail us about this, we are not sending any invoices at the moment and will waive the fine at the moment the book is returned.

Can I return books by mail?
Due to our limited opening hours, please do not send your books to the UB by mail. Books can only be returned via the 24/7 Bookbox at the outside of UB City Centre (Poststraat).

I returned a book in the 24/7 Bookbox, but the book is still in my borrowed items' list. What can I do?

We apply a quarantine period of 5 days for returned books. This means that books will only be checked in and removed from borrowed items' list after 5 days. It is possible that within these 5 days you will receive a reminder e-mail; please ignore this, any fines will be waived. Is the book still in your name after more than a week? Then we would like to hear it and we will carry out a shelf check. Please e-mail servicedesk-bibliotheek rug.nl.

Pick up books

Where can I pick up my reservation?

The UB City Centre is the only location where you can pick up or return books. Other locations mentioned in SmartCat do not apply. We are in the process of modifying these. This also applies to the Tresoar/Campus Fryslân location: staff and students of that institution can only pick up and return books at the UB City Centre.

I received an e-mail that my requested book from another library has arrived. Can I pick up the book immediately?

You will have to make an appointment by sending an e-mail to servicedesk-bibliotheek rug.nl.

My requested DVD arrived, can I pick it up immediately?

No, we normally lend out DVDs through the service desk. Because the service desk is now closed we ask you to make a pick up appointment first by sending an e-mail to: servicedesk-bibliotheek rug.nl.

Interlibrary loan (ILL)

Can I still order books or copies from other libraries?

Because many libraries are closed and/or ILL applications are no longer being processed and because sending books between different libraries at home and abroad is becoming increasingly difficult, it was decided to stop interlibrary lending (ILL) immediately. Please note: this applies to both loan and copy requests for physical works. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Can I still request articles from other libraries?

This is only possible if it concerns an e-journal. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to fulfill your request. After your request, we will keep you informed by e-mail.

I received an e-mail that my requested book from another library has arrived. Can I pick up the book immediately?

You will have to make an appointment by sending an e-mail to servicedesk-bibliotheek rug.nl.

Support finding literature

For my research or assignment I would like to get some help in finding literature. Where can I get support?

You can send an e-mail to servicedesk-bibliotheek rug.nl, or take a look at our libguides. You may also contact our information literacy team: eduteam-library rug.nl.
