Provenance and acquisition
Biography: Adam Simon van der Woude was born in 1927 in the Frisian town of Oosterlittens. He attended grammar school in Leeuwarden and studied studied theology and Semitic languages at the University of Groningen from 1947-1957. During his studies, he specialised in Aramaic, Akkadian and Egyptian in addition to Hebrew.
In 1947, the first Dead Sea Scrolls were found in a cave near Qumran, sparking Van der Woude’s interest in the subject. He published several articles on the topic during his studies and obtained his doctorate cum laude in 1957 with a thesis on the Qumran community, which attracted international attention. In 1961, he founded the Qumran Institute.
Van der Woude combined a strictly scientific approach to the textual history of the Bible with a religious commitment. He was associated with the University of Groningen throughout his academic career. Van der Woude advocated for a scientific theology and its critical interaction with other disciplines.
He received honorary doctorates from the University of Munich (1972) and the University of St Andrews (1985). In 1989, he was awarded a knighthood in the Order of the Dutch Lion. From 1957 to 1960, Van der Woude was pastor of the reformed congregation of Noordlaren-Glimmen.
