Biography:

Pieter Gerbenzon (Leeuwarden, 20 June 1920 – Luino, near Lake Maggiore, 2 September 2009) was a Dutch professor of legal history at the University of Groningen and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He studied law in Groningen. After obtaining his bachelor's degree, he took courses in Frisian so that he could read Old Frisian legal sources. In 1950, Gerbenzon became a research officer and in 1956 he obtained his doctorate. Shortly after obtaining his doctorate, Gerbenzon was appointed professor of Frisian language and literature in Utrecht, while continuing to work in Groningen. In 1964, the Groningen Faculty of Law appointed Gerbenzon as full professor.
