Summary:

 

          Documents from the ‘commissie ter bestudering van het vraagstuk der overbevolking van universiteiten    en hogescholen’ (committee for studying the problem of overcrowding at universities and colleges). The            archive mainly consists of responses to the survey that was distributed to universities and colleges         throughout Europe.

Provenance and acquisition

 

          Biography

          Herman (Harm) Tewes Deelman was born in Purmerend, 17 march 1892. His father Hermannus   Deelman was a head teacher. Deelman’s mother was named Ietje Heemstra-Deelman. After completing       the higher civic school, Deelman spent some time in the military. After this, he studied at the University       of Amsterdam. In 1916 he passed the medical exams and in 1918 he received his medical doctorate. His            dissertation was about ‘Het metastatisch carcinoom van longen en milt’ (metastatic carcinomas in lungs    and spleen). In 1916, Deelman started work as a laboratory assistant at the Dutch Cancer Research           Institute in Amsterdam. In 1919 he became the director of this laboratory. He held this position for the           following eight years. In 1924, Deelman also started working as a Professor at the University of   Groningen. His assigned fields of study were pathology, anatomy, general pathology and legal medicine,           a discipline which has since become known as forensic medicine. Starting in 1934, Deelman took on the same Professorship at the University of Amsterdam. Deelman married Margaretha Slingenberg in 1918.   He passed away in Amsterdam on 26 december 1965.

          Unknown.

          Deelman was not a member of the committee himself. He was approached by the committee to help        them distribute the surveys, but how/why the documents ended up in his possession is unknown.

 

          Future additions

          No future additions are expected.

     

Contents and collation

     

      The archive contains correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, and responses to the surveys. The     correspondence, responses and newspaper clippings appear in several languages.
