Biography:

Eric Bleumink (Dieren, 1935) graduated with distinction in physics and chemistry from Utrecht University. In 1967, he obtained his PhD, also in Utrecht, with a thesis entitled ‘Isolation and chemical characterisation of atopic allergens from certain foods’. As a biochemist, he was appointed to the Department of Dermatology at the University Medical Centre Groningen in 1977. In 1980, he was appointed Professor of Dermatology at the Groningen Faculty of Medicine, where he also served as administrative secretary.

From 1984 to 1988 he served as Vice-Chancellor, and from 1988 until his retirement in 2000 he was Chair of the Executive Board. He steered the university through turbulent times, such as the implementation of major budget cuts in the 1980s and a radical reorganisation of the university (the MUB). He also put his administrative experience to use outside the University of Groningen. He passed away on 31 January 2025 at the age of 89.
