My name is Sézaïg Vije and I am a second-year English Language and Culture student. I am also an active member of our study association NUTS, where I do not shy away from a few drinks. In my free time I like playing rugby, reading, and watching movies or series.
Why English Language and Culture?
I chose to study English because I really enjoyed the literature in secondary school. When I started with this programme, I fell in love with everything it had to offer: linguistics, modern literature, medieval literature, even academic writing. You get a broad view of English, especially in the beginning of this study, but later you also get to specialize in your favorite aspect. You will obtain extra skills as well, like critical thinking and a broader world view.
I chose to study in Groningen by elimination of the other cities that offer similar programmes, which made me realize how much better Groningen was for me. Both my parents studied in Groningen and they always praised it, so I wanted to try it for myself. I am personally from Breda, so it was quite a big step to move to the other side of the country, but I do not regret it for a second. I adore the small, but great city, but also the people, like my fellow students or the teachers.
Right now, I am thinking about becoming an English teacher, preferably higher education, but this could change in an instant, as I have not experienced everything from my study yet. There are tons of options that I probably do not even know about, so I am keeping my options open for now. There is plenty of time to choose and I am in no rush.
Always follow your gut feeling. Do not let other people influence you to the point where it is not your choice anymore. Of course, you can (and should) ask others for advice or their opinions, but always choose what feels right for you. I tried a different study before starting with English, which was not my original choice, but I let others influence me in my choice. This only made me realize much I liked English from the beginning. You have that gut feeling for a reason, so follow it!
