Simple animations with PowToon

When creating visuals for a presentation or a lesson, it is nice to have a few different tools from which to choose. PowToon is a useful tool and a nice alternative to PowerPoint. PowToon is an online tool with a free account option that allows the user to create an animated video or presentation. It has a simple interface that makes the process of creating an animation as straightforward as possible. PowToon offers a range of templates that the user can employ as a starting point then customize to fit the particular topic. For the more adventurous, the option of animating from scratch is always available. In this onehour workshop, we will look at some sample animations created with PowToon, discuss potential uses for the tool, and take time to learn the basics of its use.

Creating educational video clips with Screencastomatic

Video can support teaching in various domains, such as Cognitive, Experiential, Affective, Skills. Educational videos can be created by professional teams, but also by teachers themselves. In this workshop, we will focus on the latter. You will learn how to record your computer screen, displaying e.g. a Powerpoint presentation or a piece of software, combined with sound and/or a webcam recording of the teacher. For this, we will be using the free software application Screencastomatic, that allows for a 15minute recording. The workshop also includes a short introduction on video for education and some thoughts on preparing for a recording.

Assignments in Blackboard

Assignment submission

Blackboard assignments are used to manage the digital submission or file upload of essays, papers or other types of assignments. Assignments allow students to type in a short answer or essay response and attach a document with their submission. Students can save a draft of their work and return to it later or submit multiple attempts. Once student work is submitted, teachers can download the attachments from the grade center oneby- one or as a “batch” per assignment. They can respond to each student separately with comments and attached files. Alternatively they can distribute assignments to course groups.

Like other assessment tools, instructions for students and a point value can be provided. Written assignments allow for the assessment of critical thinking, synthesis and other higher order skills.

Inline Assignment Grading

Instead of requiring instructors to download studentsubmitted files to view or edit those submissions, instructors can now view studentsubmitted files “inline,” i.e. in the web browser, without leaving the Grade Assignment page. Instructors can see the student submission content on the left and be able to grade the submission by using the grading tools in sidebar on the right. In addition, annotation tools are available as part of the inline viewer, enabling instructors to provide feedback including comments, highlights, and even drawings/annotations directly on the inline view of the document. In this workshop, you will learn about:

  • The benefits of Blackboard Assignments, including downloading student submissions in batches;
  • Creating and Editing Assignments;
  • Uploading documents (text, PowerPoints, PDFs, etc.) to use as assignments;
  • Individual and Group Assignments;
  • Multiple Attempts;
  • Anonymous Grading;
  • Delegated Grading;
  • Inline Grading.
