John Nerbonne Professor Computational Linguistics session convener at the Annual Meeting AAAS 2015

On 13 February 2015 John Nerbonne, Professor Computational Linguistics University of Groningen, will be session convener at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in San Jose, California. John Nerbonne has defined and convened the session about scientific visualizations in linguistics: ‘Visualizing Verbal Culture: Seeing Language Diversity’.

Seeing Influence on Verbal Variation

The session focuses on linguistic diversity, geographic and social dialects, attending to its relations to language history and the language of social media. As a part of the session John Nerbonne will speak about ‘Seeing Influence on Verbal Variation’. The challenge of this year's AAAS was to view how visualization can function in all phases of scientific work from data gathering and exploration to popular presentation. The theme of Nerbonne's session is that the old contrast between verbally and visually oriented thought can be resolved.

The pronunciation distance from standard Dutch as a function of longitude and latitude, and dependent on word frequency. Especially for the high frequency words, the pronunciation distance from standard Dutch is largest, which Wieling, Nerbonne & Baayen (2011) interpreted as resistance to the influence of the standard Dutch language.
