Reference material and tips
Here is a list of the reference works most frequently used by the UVC when translating or correcting RUG material. The aim is to be as consistent as possible across the board, which is why certain books appear whereas others may not. When writing an article for a specific journal, however, the style guide/preferences for that journal should be followed.
- The spelling conventions followed within the RUG are those of the Collins English Dictionary.
- Where US English has been specified, Merriam Webster is the preferred dictionary.
-
The Gateway series of specialized dictionaries for subject-related terminology
-
Hart’s Rules/Oxford Guide to Style is the preferred authority for UK English, and the Chicago Manual of Style for US English
-
The BBI Dictionary of English Word Combinations/BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English
-
Collins Thesaurus
-
Joy Burrough-Boenisch, Righting English that’s gone Dutch, is a wonderful guide to the mistakes made by Dutch speakers when writing in English.
