English Style Guide
Welcome to the RUG Style Guide, created by the University Translation and Correction Service (UVC) of the Language Centre of the University of Groningen (RUG). These pages are designed to help you write better English, and to quickly provide you with answers to the most common questions and issues concerning style. We would like to emphasize that these tips have a strong RUG flavour, and often several alternatives can also be right.
Inevitably, every large institution develops preferences and jargon over time, and the RUG is no exception. Often, these terms and preferences can be obscure to outsiders, which is why the UVC has been collecting examples over the years. We are delighted to be able to present these preferences in the form of a RUG Style Guide. If you come across something you think should be added, please send an e-mail to email@example.com or use the feedback form.
How to use the RUG Style Guide
The RUG Style Guide has been designed to provide you with the level of detail that you require. Information is presented on a number of levels, and you can continue through the levels until you find what you are looking for. The deepest level gives examples of the particular issue in use, plus reference material.
There are separate pages for reference material and online resources recommended by the UVC. This is necessarily subjective, but we have found each entry to be particularly reliable and/or up to date and they will help with issues such as consistency in spelling, or with English word combinations.
RUG Terminology Database
The RUG Style Guide supports and is supported by the RUG Terminology Database – a database created and managed by the UVC containing over 5,000 education-related terms. Many specifically RUG terms are also included. This database is continually being added to and updated and includes the most up-to-date versions of EU educational terminology as conceived by the Tuning Project. The database is bidirectional – so you can look for both English and Dutch terms there.
There is a feedback form on all the main pages for any suggestions for improvement you may have.
