The psycho-social consequences of the Groningen earthquakes

Social Psychology

In this project, financed by the National Coordinator Earthquakes, we study the psycho-social consequences of the Groningen earthquakes. Do the earthquakes due to gas extraction affect the (mental) health of the Groningen? Why is this the case? Can we identify processes that make people more or less vulnerable in coping with the earthquakes. We study these and many more questions in three ways:1. Via a longitudinal panel study among the Groningen population over a period of two years. 2. via a large scale health data set (Lifelines). 3. qualitatively via interviews and focus groups. Importantly, this project is conducted in close cooperation both with municipalities, organizations who are active in the area and the local population. The aim is to make our results accessible both to policy makers and the local population.
