Examples field of practice activities

Observation intake

Students observe, within the framework of the Bachelor 2-course ‘Counseling Skills’, from behind one-way screens in the ambulatory intakes that are being conducted by behavioural scientists from Accare, a Centre for Child- and Youth Psychiatry.

Individual pupil-/client counseling

A student helps a pupil in the classroom in various contexts (assistance in reading, arithmetic, self-reliance, organizing homework etc.). This happens in mainstream primary and secondary schools, but also at schools for special education and other institutions where pupils with specific problems such as ADHD and autisme get help and supervision. Several examples of schools and institutions where such counseling projects take place are: OBS Borgmanschool, CBS ‘t Kompas, CSG Expertisecentrum (VO), ROC Alfa College and Molendrift.

‘Accare watches the little ones’

A student offers specialized care and supervision in a family in which a child has been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder and is being treated by Accare, Centre for Child and Youth Psychiatry in the North of the Netherlands (Young Child Teams). The student visits the family at home, once or twice a week, and organizes activities for the child that the child likes. This relieves the parents and they will have more time for themselves and for the other children in the family. The students receive prior training and are assisted by behavioural scientists from Accare by means of monthly supervision meetings .

Observations

There are several cooperation projects in the context of observation of clients. At the Salvation Army – department of Youth Care and Probation – students observe visiting arrangements between children and their parents/guardians. At a Medical Nursery School students make video recordings of children, after which they process these recordings into fragments that can be discussed in the multidisciplinary consultation.
