Information for students

What does the Faculty Council involve exactly?

As a student member of the Faculty Council, the first thing you do is to write a policy plan, which states all plans that you and the other students wish to achieve. In 2012/2013, for example, the students of the Faculty Council actively pursued further internationalization and the acquisition of more computers at the Faculty, among other things. They were also involved in the introduction of the binding study advice at the Faculty.

The official Faculty Council meetings, which always take place on Tuesday afternoons, start towards the end of September. The most important meetings are the main meetings, where you and the staff section of the Faculty Council discuss with the Faculty Board the goals that you as the Faculty Council wish to achieve. Preparation for the main meeting takes place during the preliminary meeting, which is held the week before the main meeting. The first half of the preliminary meeting is attended by students only, while the second half involves both the student members and staff members of the Faculty Council. In addition, these meetings are often attended by the Faculty Board’s student representative and one or more members of the University Council. This preparation is needed to ensure smoother proceedings at the main meeting.
A week after the main meeting the student section holds an after-meeting meeting to evaluate the main meeting and to settle all sorts of matters relevant to the meeting.
Finally, your working group meets a week after the after-meeting meeting. A working group discusses all matters concerned with a particular subject and implements objectives of the policy plan. In 2009/2010 there were two working groups: Education & Communication and Internationalization.
This cycle of meetings takes place every month: a preliminary meeting, a main meeting, an after-meeting meeting, and a working group meeting. This means that, as a member of the Faculty Council, you have one meeting per week.

As a member of the Faculty Council you are closely involved with the Faculty, in close contact with the lecturers and with the Faculty Board; moreover, you get the opportunity to give your opinion on all Faculty-related issues. In addition, you represent all students of the Faculty. Apart from going to weekly meetings, you will also attend drinks parties and participate in other enjoyable activities with the other students of the Faculty Council.
