Exam regulations

Psychology

In the Psychology programme, a predefined way is used to calculate the grades in multiple-choice exams. In short: A minimum of 56% of knowledge is required for a pass, but a correction for guessing answers is applied. Detailed information on the calculation of the grade will be included in your welcome kit which you will receive upon arrival. Important: Because a correction for guessing is applied, you are urged to answer all MC-questions, even if you have to guess an answer. You can only gain points, and only for correct answers. In some countries/cultures, incorrect answers in MC-exams will result in reduction of points. For our programme that is not the case.‚Äč

Pedagogical and Educational Sciences

Exams and resits

At the BSS faculty, each semester is divided in two blocks. Every block consists of 7 weeks of lectures, followed by 2 weeks of exams. Have a look at the academic calendar to see when resit weeks are scheduled!

You might have to get used to the philosophy of examinations at BSS as it might be very different from what you are used to. There is a chance you might fail the first exam, so be prepared to take the resit.
Important: Check the academic calender for the resit weeks
well in advance! If you failed the first exam but you cannot take part in the resit, mind that there are no other possibilities/ no individual assignments to pass a course! BSS exams can only be taken at UG, not at your home university! If you take courses at other faculties, get informed about their exam regulations, resit weeks, etc. It is very likely that those are different from BSS!

Enrolment

When we enrol you for a course at BSS you will automatically be enrolled for the exam, too. You do not have to take any action yourself. Note that the procedures and deadlines might be different at other faculties!

With regard to BSS exams or resits, you only have to take action yourself if you do not want to take the first exam but the resit or in case you passed the first exam but want to improve your grade through the resit. In such a case, please contact the Student Service Desk.

What to do in which situation?

I failed my exam on the first try: Automatic enrolment for the resit, you do not have to take any action. Please notify the Student Service Desk in case you don’t want to take the resit.
I did not take my exam on the first try:

No automatic enrolment for the resit, enrol by contacting the Student Service Desk.

I passed my exam on the first try (but I would like to take the resit in order to get a higher grade)*:

No automatic enrolment for the resit, enrol by contacting the Student Service Desk.

*Important:

  • For Psychology courses: last result counts (even if you passed the first exam and failed the resit)
  • For Sociology courses: last result counts (even if you passed the first exam and failed the resit)
  • For Pedagogical & Educational Sciences courses: highest result counts

How long will it take until I receive my grade after taking the exam?

  • Psychology courses with a multiple choice exam: You should receive your grade within 5 working days (1 week) after the exam. The grades will appear on Progress or Nestor.
  • Other courses: It usually takes 10 working days (two weeks) until the results are available. The grades will appear on Progress or Nestor.

Keep in mind that you need to bring your student card with you to every exam or resit, so the proctors can identify you!
