ABSTRACT
Although disgust is implicated in the development of some anxiety disorders, the mechanism accounting for this association has not been fully elucidated. This presentation will highlight learning as a potential pathway that may elucidate how disgust may give rise to some anxiety disorders. This will be done in the context of experimental studies that delineate unique characteristics and moderators of disgust learning. The extent to which disgust can be unlearned will also be discussed. The unlearning of disgust has clear treatment implications and preliminary evidence on the potential facilitation of disgust extinction will be presented.
