TITLE: How to Prolong the Working Life of Older Workers?

Results of a systematic review examining interventions to facilitate work ability or postpone (early) retirement of older workers.

DATE & TIME: Thursday, 20 June 2013, 15.00 - 16.00 hrs

LOCATION: Room M.0074 (Munting building), Grote Kruisstraat 2, Groningen

ABSTRACT

The aims of this systematic review were to provide an overview and to determine the quality of published peer-reviewed interventions that: i) facilitate or improve work ability of workers aged 40 years and older, ii) or extend working life by postponing retirement. Using the databases PsycINFO and Medline (2000-June 2012), as well as a snowball technique examining references of reviews, 391 studies were found. Subsequently, 3 independent reviewers selected potential relevant articles that met the following criteria: included a working population aged 40 years and older, the paper reported an intervention directed at the work ability or prevention of retirement (measured as actual retirement), and included a pre- and post-measurement. This selection procedure resulted in N= 6 peerreviewed articles that were included for further review. The results of the 6 selected papers revealed that N= 4 interventions examined work ability, and N=4 interventions examined effects in relation to postponing retirement. In this

presentation, I will present the results of these interventions, address the quality assessment (using the Cochrane guidelines) and will discuss an agenda for future intervention research. Furthermore, I will discuss the possibility of knowledge centers with different knowledge partners to stimulate new intervention field research (dutch example: www.nkdi.nl and the sloan center for aging on work in Boston: http://www.bc.edu/research/agingandwork/about/researchFellows.html)
