Posted on:09 October 2012

A team of 11 University of Groningen students won the European iGEM competition last Sunday in Amsterdam. This victory qualifies them for the finals of the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM) in Boston. One hundred and seventy teams from across the world take part in the competition, which aims to convert bacteria to a practical goal using biotechnology.

Faster drug development thanks to RNA wrap
Posted on:23 July 2012

University of Groningen scientists have demonstrated how to speed up drug development using well-known generic techniques. By creating a protective wrap (called an aptamer) from RNA, they managed to selectively modify groups of an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Using standard chemical synthesis, it would take about two years to design and perform all the necessary steps for this modification. The new technique takes just two to three months. The results were published online by the journal Nature Chemistry on 22 July.

Greater understanding of artificial photosynthesis
Posted on:02 July 2012
Plants photosynthesise sunlight into a direct source of fuel. Artificial nanotubes have been created which can partially imitate the process of photosynthesis. Research carried out by Groningen physicists together with their German and American colleagues has revealed exactly how the nanotubes work. This information is important to be able to design artificial photosynthetic systems that convert sunlight directly into engine-ready fuel.
