Faculty Technical Support

The Faculty Technical Support (FTD) department is made up of the departments that support the research and teaching groups within the Faculty of Science and Engineering in the development and construction of equipment for teaching and research. This is mainly equipment for which no suitable standard solution is available commercially.

FTD is located at the Zernike Complex (Nijenborgh 4), Centre for Life Sciences (CVL, Nijenborgh 7) and the Pharmacy Centre (Antonius Deusinglaan 1).

FTD, just like the Purchasing, Library Management, Building Maintenance and In-house Emergency Services departments, falls under the Internal Services (FZ) department of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

FTD comprises the following departments/sections:

  • Mechanics Department
  • Electronics Department
  • Woodworking
  • Glass-blowing

Glass-blowing and Woodworking are part of the Mechanics Department. There is also a combined technical storeroom for the departments of Electronics and Mechanics.

The FTD located at Nijenborgh 4 will move shortly to building 5112, the former location of the Centre of Isotope Research (CIO) of the ESRIG institute.

Moving of the FTD will take place in two phases. The first phase will take place at the end of July/beginning of August 2017. The second phase is scheduled for September.

The glass-instrument workshop, the conventional instrument workshop incl. the working places of the instrument engineers and the technical warehouse, will be moved by the end of July/beginning of August. During the moving process, the glass instruments workshop will be able to process all current glass-work. For a few days, it will not be possible to produce or repair large objects. The conventional lathes and milling machines will be available as usual. During the moving of the technical store, some technical items might not be available immediately.

The CNC machines and the Electronics department will move in September. The CNC turning and milling activities as well as the wire-EDM will be available as usual. During the moving of the Electronics Department, service is provided by the Linnaeusborg (building 5173, room 0067).

Inconveniences during the moving are unavoidable. The FTD will, however, be operational as usual, even during the moving. There will be no interruption of services.
