Second year MPS student Susana Figueroa
'My name is Susana Figueroa and I´m a in the 2nd year of my master in medical pharmaceutical sciences. I am from Colombia where I did my bachelor in Pharmacy. I worked as a hospital pharmacist because I wanted to experience the real practice. During this time, I got in touch with pharmacoepidemiology studies through its use as instrument to evaluate and make decisions at the pharmacy and therapeutics committee or to assess drug adverse events. The pharmacoepidemiology research is an incipient field in my country and I´d like to actively participate in its development. In order to improve my knowledge and professional profile I decided to study abroad, nothing better to have an academic formation in an international enviroment.
I found out about the University of Groningen at EuroPosgrados, a fair for european universities who offer international and exchange programs. At the University of Groningen´s booth, I got a booklet about its academic programs and the life in the city. What I read in there fitted pretty good in my career interests , I got the admission and started all the preparations in order to live in the Netherlands.
The pharmacoepidemiology field is particularly appealing to me because in my opinion the information obtained through the research of events or exposures related to medications in population, provides useful tools to improve health care practice and administration. On the other hand, the research group is very active, provided its publications and ongoing projects. So far, from the courses I followed up what I appreciate the most is the possibility to acquire not only basic or new concepts, but to get to compare its applicability and understand the differences or similarities among the dutch and colombian system. The interaction with students from other nationalities and knowledge also has enriched the learning.'
