City, travelling & hotels
As a lively university city, Groningen has the youngest average population in the Netherlands. With a population of 180.000, a quarter is student! Thanks to the worldknown traffic circulation plan implemented in the sixties Groningen is world’s leading biking city. It has 2.4 bikes per head (including kids), a number unprecedented in this car driven world! It has a long and turbulent history, which becomes evident from the historic warehouses, courts and buildings. Groningen is also a city with nerve, with the most numerous examples of innovative architecture within its boundaries. The University with its challenging buildings is a main contributor to Groningen’s image. In addition, it was once proclaimed the city with the best city centre in the Netherlands because of its charm. Experience all of this and explore Groningen!
The University of Groningen has offered us its Hanze Societeit, in the center of town, very near the University Guesthouse, and a ten minutes walk from the railway station. Oude Boteringestraat 19, Groningen.
How to reach Groningen?
The best way to reach Groningen is by train. Railway is the most efficient transport system in The Netherlands. Take a train at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Groningen. There is a direct train from Amsterdam Schiphol airport to Groningen every one hour (Every hour past 21 minutes) and with a change over at Amersfoort every one hour (Every hour past 51 minutes). So, there is a train every 30 minutes from Schiphol to Groningen, including a direct train once every hour (xx.19, from platform 3 underneath the airport). It takes approximately 2:15 hrs to reach Groningen from Amsterdam Schiphol airport. You can check for timings and any other relevant information at the following the Dutch railway web site (www.ns.nl).
Although we do not recommend to make use of your car within the city of Groningen by car (Groningen was world news in the sixties implementing its traffic circulation plan, with its inner-city restrictive car use still in place), it is very accessible to get there through the A7 (connecting Germany) and A28 (from the South) national highways.
Groningen has its own international airport, although only with a very limited number of international destinations. Groningen is very well connected by train with Schiphol Amsterdam International Airport (see ‘by train’). There is also a bus connection with Bremen international airport.
